A Policy Officer will work in public, private and not-for profit sectors, across a range of different types of organisations and employers, such as the Civil Service, Local Authorities, nongovernmental organisations, charities, unions and private businesses. Policy Officers work in varied environments including in an office, onsite, or remotely. On occasion they may work with other stakeholders at their sites or overseas. The role of a Policy Officer is to help shape or influence public policy. Public policy involves enacting solutions to improve the health, welfare, and prosperity of citizens.

Gateway Requirements
To reach Gateway the employer will need to be satisfied that the apprentice is consistently working at, or above, the occupational competence of the Level 4 Policy Officer Standard.
At Gateway the apprentice will submit their portfolio of evidence and project proposal scoping document for review. At Gateway the apprentice will have achieved Level 2 English and Maths, if appropriate.
Project Proposal, Presentation and Questioning
The apprentice will complete their project proposal and project evidence locator, a maximum of 12 weeks after Gateway. The presentation and questioning will last 45 minutes (20-minute presentation and 25 minutes for questioning) with the Innovate Awarding Assessor either in the workplace or remotely.
Professional Discussion underpinned by a Portfolio
The professional discussion will take place either in the workplace or remotely with an Innovate Awarding Assessor and will last for 90 minutes. They will ask a number of questions after reviewing the apprentice’s portfolio of evidence.
