About the apprenticeship

Improvement Technicians are responsible for delivery and coaching of improvement activity within an area of responsibility, often associated with Lean and Six Sigma methodologies. They can be found across all industry sectors and functions including automotive, banking, engineering, food products, IT, property, retail, telecoms Local and County Councils, NHS, Voluntary / Charity, Utilities, Pharmaceuticals, Insurance, Hospitality etc. Typically, Technicians work as a member of an operational team to resolve problems - preventing re-occurrence, engaging others in issues affecting them and to support the improvement of performance.

Assessment methods

To reach Gateway the employer must be satisfied that the apprentice is consistently working at, or above, the occupational competence of the Level 3 Improvement Technician Standard.

The apprentice will have completed a log which addresses all the KSBs required within the Standard.

A project portfolio is required to evidence completion of an improvement project(s).

Level 2 English and Mathematics in line with the funding rules.

Multiple Choice Examination

The apprentice will undertake a multiple-choice exam to assess the knowledge elements of the standard.. This will comprise 40 questions and last 40 minutes.. This is an open book exam.

Project Report, Presentation and Questioning

The apprentice will write a project report which shows business benefit within one month following the EPA Gateway. They will then present their report, which will be followed by questions.

The presentation will last for 30-40 minutes, and the questioning will last 25-35 minutes for a maximum total of 75 minutes.

Professional Discussion underpinned by Log

The professional discussion will take place with an Innovate Awarding Assessor and will last for 40-50 minutes. They will ask the apprentice a number of questions after reviewing their log.

Grading

The assessments will be graded as Distinction/Merit/Pass/Fail. The last step along the journey is the receipt of the certificate which will be sent to the employer by the ESFA.

Resit costs

Project: £280. Professional Discussion: £250. MCQ - 1st resit free, £50 thereafter
