About the apprenticeship

A Food and Beverage Team Member is responsible for carrying out a range of food and beverage service activities, in restaurants, bars, pubs, counter service, and coffee outlets and meeting quality, deadline, productivity, hygiene, financial and environmental requirements. They are largely responsible for timing of service, atmosphere, and guest management front of house.

Assessment methods

Gateway Requirements

To reach Gateway the employer will need to be satisfied that the apprentice is consistently working at, or above, the occupational competence of the Level 2 Food and Beverage Team

Member Standard. At Gateway, apprentices must have completed training towards English and maths qualifications in line with the apprenticeship funding rules. At Gateway, apprentices will submit a portfolio of evidence for review.

Observation with Questioning

The apprentice will complete a two hour observation and questions in their workplace carrying out their daily duties. The observational element will take 90 minutes, with 30 minutes for questioning. The apprentice will be observed:

  • assembling and serving food and beverages to business standards

  • taking opportunities to maximise sales and improve customer experience and satisfaction

  • communicating effectively with customers

  • maintaining a safe and hygienic working environment

  • complying with health and safety and food safety legislation including allergens

  • using equipment and technology relevant to role

  • handling transactions and payments

  • working in a team to deliver allocated tasks

  • complying with professional standards.

The assessor will also ask at least three questions after the observation.

Interview underpinned by a Portfolio of Evidence

The interview will take place with an Innovate Awarding Assessor and will last for 60 minutes. They will ask at least nine questions after reviewing the apprentice’s portfolio of evidence. The portfolio itself will not be assessed.

Grading

Each assessment will be graded as Distinction/Pass/Fail and the apprentice will receive an overall grade of Distinction/Merit/Pass/Fail. The last step along the journey is the receipt of the certificate which will be sent to the employer.

Resit costs

Observation: £200. Interview: £250.
